A Literary evening in SG

A local author is organising this and it sounds rather interesting... I've cut and pasted from an email, sorry it's longish. I'll pop it onto the Events calendar and boost it to the top of the threads nearer the time in case anyone would like to go. A literary evening at the Sugar Lounge Wednesday 23 February 2010 @ 7.30pm Admission FREE Come and meet the authors, hear them read, buy their books Alev Adil will be reading from Venus Infers Alev was born in Cyprus. Her first collection of poetry Venus Infers was published in 2004. Alev has reviewed for The Times Literary Supplement, The Independent and The Financial Times and lectures at the University of Greenwich where she is head of the Department of Creative, Critical and Communication Studies. She has performed her poetry at a number of venues in London including the Hampstead Theatre, the Shaw Theatre and the Jazz Café. Moris Farhi will be reading poems from Songs from two continents (Pub. Spring 2011) Moris was born in Ankara, Turkey, 1935 and has lived in England since 1954. He wrote scripts for tv and films before deciding to be a novelist. Moris has written 6 novels to date, two of which won prizes. He has also been active, since the 1980s, in the defence of freedom of expression. In 2001 Moris was awarded an MBE, is a Vice-President of International PEN and a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Aamer Hussein will be reading from The Cloud Messenger (launch 1 March 2011) Aamer was born in Karachi and moved to London in 1970. He reviews regularly for The Independent and the TLS. He is the author of four collections of short stories, most recently Insomnia, and a novel Another Gulmohar Tree. He is currently Professorial Writing Fellow at the University of Southampton, and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2004. Matthias Politycki will be reading from Next World Novella (launched 19 Feb 2011) Matthias has published over twenty novels and poetry collections. He is ranked among the most successful literary authors writing in German. His books have sold over 200,000 copies and have been translated into several languages, including French and Italian. Next World Novella (Jenseitsnovelle), translated from German by Anthea Bell will be published by Peirene Press in February 2011. Eva Salzman will be reading from Double Crossing & Women's Work: Modern Women Poets Writing in English Eva’s books include: Double Crossing: New & Selected Poems (Bloodaxe), One Two II (Wrecking Ball Press), illustrated by Van Howell and Bargain with the Watchman (Oxford University Press). John Kinsella calls her anthology Women's Work "a fabulous book…..a case study in anthologising" and The Guardian included it among the Best Poetry Books of 2008. Her writing has been translated into French, Spanish and Romanian, and widely published - in the US and UK particularly – and broadcast on the BBC. .
